E R Durkee & Co. Bottle, New York, Pat. 1877

This is a dug bottle that used to contain salad dressing. There is a fascinating history of the Durkee factory building at this site:http://oldelmhurst.blogspot.ca/search/label/Durkee. E. R. Durkee was a prominent condiment maker in New York. The company was founded by Eugene R. Durkee in 1857 and continues today as the Durkee company. This clear bottle stands 8 1/4" tall and has the words E R Durkee & Co. New York embossed on the face of the bottle.  It also has an interesting picture of a gauntleted hand, with a belt bordering both the lettering and the glove. It has amethyst hints to the glass.

Jewsbury and Brown Green Glass Ginger Beer Bottle 1890's

Jewsbury and Brown were soda water and ginger beer makers based in Manchester, England.  This bottle stands 6 3/4" tall and is made of green glass with the Jewsbury and Brown logo, made up of the initials J & B, and Jewsbury and Brown in written script, all set in a Star of David.

This bottle is one of my favourites, even though I believe it is a common bottle.  I like it because it is the only glass ginger beer of its age in my collection.  Enjoy!

 

White Rock Paper Label Sparkling Mineral Water Bottle

This paper label brown glass bottle once contained world famous White Rock Sparkling Mineral Water.  The mineral water was lithiated, carbonated and bottled at the White Rock Mineral Springs in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA.  This particular bottle is the larger and more common 1 pint, 8oz. size.  The White Rock Mineral Springs Company got its start in 1871 when H.M. Colver bought the White Rock Springs and the surrounding 60 acres and began to turn the site into a health resort destination.  The Native Americans in the area had long believed the spring water had medicinal properties and Colver capitalized on this by building a pavillion, a spring house, and then later a health hotel.  In five years time Colver was bottling the spring water and by 1890, White Rock Water was one of the most popular bottled table waters in the US.  In 1893, the company adopted the image of Psyche, as represented in a painting by German artist Paul Thumann, as their trademark, and the famous image of Psyche has now endured for over 110 years as the symbol of the White Rock Company.  The White Rock brand is still being manufactured to this day; unfortunately, I haven't tried it as I can't find it anywhere in my area.  I hear they do mail order...  Check their website for more information about the modern company (whiterockbeverages.com) 
 

Glyco-Thymoline Bottle

In 1890, Samuel Owen and Oscar Kress developed Glyco-Thymoline as a treatment for oral conditions, such as sore throat and mucosity. It was designed as a mouth rinse and soon became quite popular with the general public and with hospitals.  It was marketed as the world's first mouthwash.

         This clear bottle stands at 8 1/2" high and it has K & O. CO. NEW YORK 852 on the base.  The words GLYCO-THYMOLINE on the front.

 

 

 

 

Perry Davis Vegetable Pain Killer Bottle

 

The Perry Davis story is remarkable to say the least. Perry was crippled at an early age, and he was a shoemaker's apprentice but seemed to travel working here and there. He tried his hand at inventing agricultural machinery, but this failed. At the age of 47, Davis became ill and thought he wouldn't make it. He apparently concocted his own pain relief medicine, which provided him with a near miraculous cure. Perry Davis went on to patant and manufacture his Vegetable Pain Killer, one of the first remedies to tackle pain relief specifically. His medicine was a worldwide success, due in part to missionaries who took it with them by the case to the Far East for their mission stations to tackle a cholera outbreak. The US Civil War also helped with sales of his medicine. Perry Davis passed away in 1862, a successful and famous man. This bottle stands at 6 3/8" tall.
